At the close of the Civil War the American South sought to rebuild its identity and its economy; and perhaps no undertaking was more vital to both than the Chisholm Trail. Belton provided a vital stop on the bold, courageous push from South Texas to Abilene, Kansas. Named for Jesse Chisholm who had established a trade route north from Texas, the Chisholm Trail saw as many as 1,000 head of cattle at a stretch thundering toward market in Kansas.
